NUS Module Review: GEH1049 Public Health, GEH1074 Luck, GET1020 Darwin

I have just finished my exams and here I'm writing module reviews because of some recent changes. This is for people considering which Unrestricted Electives or General Education Modules to take. Usually, the people who survived the module would write module reviews, please do note that there are also non-survivors and do choose wisely! (anthropic bias). I took 3 GEs in this semester with 31MCs overload. These UEs are ok/easy to score As.

1. GEH1049/GEC1015 Public Health in Action AY21/22 Sem 1
Assessment Components and Weightage 4MCs
Group Assignments 1 15%
Group Assignment 2 20%
Graded Peer Review 5%
Research Skills Quiz 5% Week 9
Public Health Lecture Quiz 15% Week12
Final Assignment 40% Week 11-13

+Lectures were pre-recorded and you can enjoy watching them in your free time.
+There were no tutorials.
-The lecture content would be tested in the Week 12 Quiz, unlike the previous years.

The group assignments and the final assignment mainly focused on using the McLeroy Socio-ecological Model and the Public Health Approach so you just need to grasp these two concepts well. The first assignment was about writing a public health issue and the second assignment was about writing a letter to the ministry. Each group would consist of 5 people and the lecturer would choose your group members to ensure a more fair assessment. For example, a year 1, 2, 3 and 4 from different faculties would form a team. Unlike the previous years, group assignments consist of 40% of your overall grade so luck plays a role here.

-The Research Skills Quiz tested on APA style writing and public health resources. If you are year 2/3/4 then you should be quite familiar with this already. The Public Health Lecture Quiz was tricky so do take note in your lecture notes whether there were parts that are similar but were different. The quizzes did not have backward navigation but were open book.

-The Final assignment required us to choose 3 out of 4 topics to write within 2 weeks which we had to submit both copies on Turnitin and LumiQuiz. It was a rush writing this assignment within the tight deadline and the topics would require you to write about obstacles. If you did not submit on both platforms or they are not identical, you will be given zero marks which was a pretty scary situation.

Difficulty: 2/5
Workload: 2/5
Overall review: 4.5/5
As a year 4 nursing student, I would say this module offers great knowledge and insights for my career. As for group work, I did contribute more to the group because I have relevant knowledge, I'm a senior and I have two year 1s in my team. Oh my! Why put two year 1s in my team...so yeah you are lucky if you get healthcare students in your team! My team got above-average marks for Group assignment 1 so it should be okay I think!

Recommended if
+you like healthcare
+light workload
+groupwork
+flexible lectures
+no exams
+100% CA
+continuous prose writing
+familiar with APA and healthcare
+content is similar to nursing
+new interesting concepts e.g. micro/macro spectrum of health intervention

Tips to score
-get meta-analyses (highest level of evidence) to support your essay
-systematic reviews are fine too
-use almost all the levels of the socio-ecological model and public health approach steps
-follow the Population, Intervention, Outcome (PICO) in your individual assignment, a popular framework for health-related research

Notable differences from the past years
-It seems like this module would keep changing its components and content.
-2019 had an overall 30% group component and no lecture quiz
-2019 had 30% weekly reflection and 25%, 40%, individual assignment
-2017/2018 had 35% group work 20%, 40% individual assignment

Expected grade: A
Actual grade: A+

Demand was okay because there were a lot of slots!

2. GEH1074/GEC1028 Luck AY21/22 Sem 1
Assessment Components and Weightage 4 MCs
Lecture Polls 10%
Tutorials 10%
LumiNUS Weekly Quizzes 15%
Midterm 30%
Final 35%

-Lectures and tutorials were fairly easy, you just need to participate in the online polls and attend these weekly sessions. Lectures were usually held for 1.5 hours and tutorials were held for 1 hour which was fairly short. Tutorials were held by teaching assistants who were friendly and informative.

-LumiNUS Weekly Quizzes were fairly easy to score also and only 9 out of 10 quizzes would contribute to your grades so if you did badly for one quiz, it's okay! The quizzes were based on the weekly readings. If you like to read books like me, this module would be enjoyable for you. It's like reading books in your free time but do write down notes beside each paragraph that you read. You can also put an OCR layer so it is searchable.

-Midterm exam is 1 hour which tested 3 questions while the Finals is 2 hours which tested 5 questions. The exams were fairly okay and it was an open-book exam. You would have to refer to your lectures and readings for this exam so do focus on these two materials.

Difficulty: 2/5
Workload: 3/5
Overall review: 4.5/5
I find the lecturer very entertaining and the concepts very interesting. Each week had about 2-5 readings so those increased the workload.

Recommended if
+you like reading books
+like thinking
+philosophy
+social science
+light workload
+types fast
+short answer question
+interesting concepts e.g. effective altruism, egalitarian, meritocracy
+has Darwin components e.g. sexual selection, genetic mutation
+has physics components e.g. quantum physics
+has ALS1010/ALS1020 components e.g. confirmation bias, loss aversion

Tips
+do score close to full marks for quizzes
+i scored A- for midterms so that's how I predicted my expected grade
+write e.g. "p.55 of our readings The Black Swan" for each book paragraph for easier reference

Expected grade: A-
Actual grade: A-

Demand was high but my year 4 priority won the round

3. GET1020/GEX1007 Darwin and Evolution
Assessment Components and Weightage 4 MCs
50% MCQ Midterm
50% MCQ Finals

-There were no notes so you may have to transcribe every word that the lecturer said in class.
+There were also people selling notes online if you do not want to transcribe but it could be outdated.
+The lectures were recorded so you can watch them in your free time.
-Actually, every word that the lecturer said could be important so do write it down.

+Previously closed-book MCQ exams but now is open-book open internet exams. -I find that the open internet would take up a lot of time so you should only do that if you have a lot of spare time.
+Do focus on myths and truths and this module is more of a historical module than a biological module.
-The exam questions were a bit confusing and the MCQ options were very lengthy.

Difficulty: 3/5
Workload: 3.5/5
Overall review: 3/5
Unlike many reviewers, I did not like this module because the bell curve was very steep and it made me panic. It was an interesting module on evolution and how man descended from common ancestors but the steep bell curve was really steep. A lot of people say that this is an easy A but I differ. The lecturer was really very funny but sometimes I cannot catch what he was saying because of the new complex terms e.g. Theology.

Recommended if
+you like MCQ
+like myth-busting
+history
+biology
+fun facts
+familiar with H2 biology e.g. homology, embryology
+interesting concepts e.g. Humans originated from Africa, there is no such thing as race

Expected grade: B
Actual grade: B

Demand: ok, there were a lot of slots

The luck module has Darwin components inside so both would complement each other. Thank you for reading and good luck with your future choices on General Modules and UEs!

How to prepare for NUS QET (Qualifying English Test)

I'm sharing my study tips because I could not find much before I did the test. There were no useful guides in helping me in QET test back then in 2018 so I thought of writing this blog post.  What is NUS QET? It is an English essay test which tests your English proficiency. The paper is 1h 30min long and it takes place at NUS on a single day. Who takes NUS QET? Those who got D and below for Alevels General Paper (that's me!), polytechnic and foreign students. I scored well in GP in school but I didn't do well in Alevels. I got an E for Alevels. Why take NUS QET? You must take QET to graduate from the school and complete English modules if you fail the test. Why you should pass QET? This is because there are a lot of people bidding for the English module and as a newbie, you would not have enough points to compete with those seniors. Taking an English module also disallows you from taking other electives because it can overload your MCs. How's my result? ...

Prima Deli Pandan Waffles Recipe

My favorite waffles are Prima Deli's Waffles. It's soft, addictive, and smells so fragrant so I am trying to find the recipe. Coconut milk is crucial to making pandan waffles so do get coconut milk!  1. Youtube Vasudevan Suganthi 1 1/2 cup plain flour  3/4 cup caster sugar  1 1/2 tsp baking powder  1/2 tsp salt 2 eggs 3 tbsp butter pandan paste 200ml coconut milk  My verdict: It does taste similar to Prima deli's waffles but it is not as fluffy or soft.  Something seems lacking.  page views as of 6/8/23 I ate my waffles with chopsticks out of convenience 😂 Tell me that you are Asian without telling me you are Asian 2. Sherbakes Pandan Waffles 125g all-purpose flour  50g caster sugar  2tsp baking powder  1/8 tsp salt  1 egg 1/2 tsp green pandan taste  200ml coconut milk  60g unsalted butter (melted) My verdict: This taste differs much from Prima Deli's waffles. The mixture is thick and viscous but Prima deli's waffles mix...

How to prepare for NUS Nursing Interview

page views as of 6/8/23 Hello prospective nurses, so you want to be a nurse? It may have been a difficult decision to be a nurse and hence I would like to help you and share tips on how to prepare for this interview.  For those currently studying in poly and Alevel, study well so you will not have to go for this interview.  What are the chances of entering NUS Nursing?  Most people think that Nursing is very easy to get in because of the low IGP score and nurses are in high demand. As long as you are sincere, it is high likely that you get in. If your IGP is below 10 percentile, no worries because you can still get in.  Fun Fact: In 2017, there were 2200 applications and 235 people were accepted into the course. This is  10.6% of the people who applied. Nus Nursing acceptance rate thus is 10.6% but it is expected to rise due to the high demand for nurses.  When was the interview? I was scheduled for a nursing interview in the first week of A...
