NUS Module Review: LAB1201, LAB2201 Bahasa Indonesia

What is Bahasa Indonesia?
Bahasa means Language. Bahasa Indonesia is Indonesian Language. This is a NUS Language module.

Why is it important to know a module review?
You are going to take a module for a semester, at least 3-4 months and you want to make sure that you are making the right choice. I had to ask my seniors for advice and their textbooks. I barely knew these seniors but I had to be thick-skinned just to ensure my grades are okay.

Why learn Bahasa Indonesia?
Bahasa Indonesia is relatively similar to Malay. It is important to speak Malay in my career as there are many older Singaporeans who can speak Malay. There are also Malay-only speaking patients and it would be frustrating if we do not know what they want. Moreover, Indian and Chinese speaking patients can also speak Malay. This module has no exam, is fun and can be easy to score.

Why not just learn Malay?
The bidding points required to enter Malay module is very high (1000+points) and the bell curve is very steep. As for Bahasa Indonesia, the bidding points required is just minimum 1 point.

Who learns Bahasa Indonesia?
Nursing,Yale-NUS, Pharmacy, FASS and even Law students.

What I like about this module
It gives me an ability to have basic conversation with my patients. I can explain what the medication is for to the patients. For example, Obat ini untuk tekanan darah tinggi. Translating to English-This drug is for high blood pressure. When the patients tell me about their family, I understand who they are referring to and how many children and grandchildren they have.

What I do not like about this module
Listening Comprehension. My brain processes speech slower than average. The speaker also speaks rather fast in the recording. Many people complained about listening comprehension but I think they did better than me. I think the bell curve is steep. I looked through the stack of exam papers and I knew that my grades are average at about 75 percentile. My overall grade is satisfying but not very satisfying. My marks was 70-80 marks range over 100 and above average is >80 marks. Cohort for LAB1201 is about 200+ and cohort for LAB2201 is 80+.

Assessment
AY18/19 Sem 1
LAB1201
100% CA (No exam)
15% Written Homework
40% 2 Written tests of 20% each
15% Project
15% Oral exam
15% Attendance and Class participation

AY18/19 Sem 2
LAB2201 (This is level 2,  LAB1201 is pre-requisite)
100% CA (No exam)
15% Written Homework
40% 2 Written tests of 20% each
20% Project
10% Oral exam
15% Attendance and Class participation

Written Homework: The teachers would ask us to write essays as homework in Bahasa Indonesia for them to mark. The feedback is quite vague. There is baik, bagus, cukup bagus, bagus sekali. I think the best one is bagus sekali translating to very good.

Written Test: The paper may be different each time but it usually test on
-Listening Comprehension
-Fill in the Blanks
-Comprehension
-Dialogue
-Grammar

Project: This is actually the best and fun part of the module. In LAB1201, you will get to choose which activity you want to do and there are cooking, singing, dancing and costume. In LAB2201, you will get to choose the Indonesian region and do a skit.

Oral Exam: In LAB1201, there is a pair and individual component. You will get to pair up with your friend and prepare for a dialogue. And then for individual component, pick a topic or a picture. In LAB2201, you will get to pick a topic and talk about it.

Attendance and Class participation: Attend all lectures, tutorials and participate actively in project. All the tutors are very nice and sweet! I took up the Class monitor role in my project in order to get higher participation points. No worries because the project duration is only 3 weeks.

Content of the Module
In Sem1, I borrowed my senior's textbook and bought the workbook. In Sem2, I just download the file from the NUS Library website because I do not like to carry heavy books around. It is completely free. You can learn about the time, day, numbers, basic introduction, body parts, adjectives, transportation, food, fruits, directions, family, buildings, jobs and clothes.

Grades for both modules: B+ (still okay lah)
I did not struggle but listening comprehension pulled me down.
If you put in hard work, maybe you can get A-.

I created a simple book for conversational Malay and Bahasa Indonesia. If you are interested, you can email me to get a copy of this ebook for $2.90.

Yes, finishing the driving test within 2 months (jan-feb) is possible! It took me an extra month because I failed my first driving test. I'm a BDCC School Auto student.  Warning! How to prepare for NUS QET (Qualifying English Test)

I'm sharing my study tips because I could not find much before I did the test. There were no useful guides in helping me in QET test back then in 2018 so I thought of writing this blog post.  What is NUS QET? It is an English essay test which tests your English proficiency. The paper is 1h 30min long and it takes place at NUS on a single day. Who takes NUS QET? Those who got D and below for Alevels General Paper (that's me!), polytechnic and foreign students. I scored well in GP in school but I didn't do well in Alevels. I got an E for Alevels. Why take NUS QET? You must take QET to graduate from the school and complete English modules if you fail the test. Why you should pass QET? This is because there are a lot of people bidding for the English module and as a newbie, you would not have enough points to compete with those seniors. Taking an English module also disallows you from taking other electives because it can overload your MCs. How's my result?

Prima Deli Pandan Waffles Recipe

My favorite waffles are Prima Deli's Waffles. It's soft, addictive, and smells so fragrant so I am trying to find the recipe. Coconut milk is crucial to making pandan waffles so do get coconut milk!  1. Youtube Vasudevan Suganthi 1 1/2 cup plain flour  3/4 cup caster sugar  1 1/2 tsp baking powder  1/2 tsp salt 2 eggs 3 tbsp butter pandan paste 200ml coconut milk  My verdict: It does taste similar to Prima deli's waffles but it is not as fluffy or soft.  Something seems lacking.  page views as of 6/8/23 I ate my waffles with chopsticks out of convenience 😂 Tell me that you are Asian without telling me you are Asian 2. Sherbakes Pandan Waffles 125g all-purpose flour  50g caster sugar  2tsp baking powder  1/8 tsp salt  1 egg 1/2 tsp green pandan taste  200ml coconut milk  60g unsalted butter (melted) My verdict: This taste differs much from Prima Deli's waffles. The mixture is thick and viscous but Prima deli's waffles mixture is of watery and smooth texture. These

How to prepare for NUS Nursing Interview

page views as of 6/8/23 Hello prospective nurses, so you want to be a nurse? It may have been a difficult decision to be a nurse and hence I would like to help you and share tips on how to prepare for this interview.  For those currently studying in poly and Alevel, study well so you will not have to go for this interview.  What are the chances of entering NUS Nursing?  Most people think that Nursing is very easy to get in because of the low IGP score and nurses are in high demand. As long as you are sincere, it is high likely that you get in. If your IGP is below 10 percentile, no worries because you can still get in.  Fun Fact: In 2017, there were 2200 applications and 235 people were accepted into the course. This is  10.6% of the people who applied. Nus Nursing acceptance rate thus is 10.6% but it is expected to rise due to the high demand for nurses.  When was the interview? I was scheduled for a nursing interview in the first week of April 2018. On 2nd April, I re
